Timothee Chalamet has signed what industry sources describe as the most lucrative deal in independent film history, committing to star in a trilogy of interconnected films directed by Wes Anderson. The arrangement, reportedly worth upward of $75 million for the actor across three pictures, will see Chalamet play the same character at different stages of life in films spanning the 1920s, 1960s, and present day.
The first installment, tentatively titled "The Penrose Hotel," is set to begin production this summer in the south of France, with Anderson assembling his trademark ensemble cast around Chalamet. Names already attached include Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer breakout star Jenna Ortega. Searchlight Pictures will distribute, with a targeted festival premiere at Venice or Cannes in early 2027.
For Chalamet, 30, the deal represents a deliberate pivot back toward auteur-driven cinema after his blockbuster turn as Paul Atreides in the "Dune" franchise and his acclaimed portrayal of Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown." "Timothee has been very intentional about balancing commercial work with projects that feed his soul," his agent told Variety. "Working with Wes has been a dream of his since he was a film student."
Anderson, known for his meticulous visual style in films like "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The French Dispatch," has reportedly been developing the trilogy concept for over five years. Friends say the director wrote the lead role specifically with Chalamet in mind, calling him "the most gifted actor of his generation." The project marks the first time Anderson has conceived a multi-film narrative arc in his three-decade career.
