Hailey Bieber has opened up about her "lonely journey" battling premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) following the birth of her son, Jack Blues. The 29-year-old Rhode founder revealed her diagnosis in a recent interview, explaining that PMDD is a severe form of PMS characterized by extreme mood swings.
Behavioral symptoms of PMDD can include profound sadness or hopelessness, anxiety, intense moodiness, irritability, and anger. "After I had my son, I struggled with [PMDD] a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it," Bieber stated.
The model shared that discussing her struggles has provided her with comfort. "Conversation, for me personally, makes me feel less alone," she explained. "When we can identify with each other and have conversations relating to each other and talking about the things we’re dealing with and struggling with, I do think it makes it feel like less of a lonely journey."
Bieber told Women's Wear Daily (WWD) that she is passionate about women's health and frustrated by the lack of awareness surrounding it. "Especially after having my own child. That was just a really intense and special journey that I had," she elaborated. "There’s so much that happens when you are pregnant, during childbirth. There’s so many things that happen leading up to having a child." Bieber and her husband welcomed Jack Blues in August 2024.
She first publicly discussed her PMDD during an appearance in May, noting its disruptive impact on her work, relationships, and social life. "For me, it felt like the week before my period was not just ‘PMS,'” she explained. “It felt extreme mentally. Like, ‘Why does it feel like my whole entire life is going to end?'” She added, “It sucks. It is also dangerous, and it should be taken seriously.”
Bieber is not the only celebrity to speak out about PMDD. "Riverdale" alum Lili Reinhart, singer Zara Larsson, and influencer Dixie D’Amelio have also shared their experiences with the disorder. D’Amelio discussed how PMDD severely affected her during the Season 3 premiere of “The D’Amelio Show” on Hulu in September 2023. “People are going to be like, ‘Oh my God, everybody gets that.’ Like, no,” she said in a confessional. “I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to want to die every month before you got your period,” she continued. “It’s not supposed to affect every single aspect in your life from sleep to anxiety.” D’Amelio, 25, listed her symptoms as "losing the will to live, irritability and anger."
More recently, Reinhart appeared on the “Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky” podcast in November 2025, revealing she felt suicidal after discontinuing anti-depressants and birth control. “So, the week before my period, I feel suicidal,” Reinhart, 30, stated. “And I didn’t know that I felt that way until I wasn’t on medication.”
