King Frederik of Denmark found himself temporarily barred from his seat as he arrived at his country’s parliament for its official opening this year. He was accompanied by his wife, Queen Mary, and his aunt, Princess Benedikte.

As the three royals made their way to the balcony, where Danish royals traditionally sit for the opening, Frederik X discovered a red rope still in place, blocking access to his designated seat. The King initially attempted to walk around the side to reach his spot but found it impossible and returned to the entrance.

There, he and Queen Mary carefully removed the rope, allowing all three royals to take their seats. The Danish royal family has observed parliamentary proceedings from this special balcony since 1988; prior to that, they sat among politicians for significant events like official openings.

They listened to the opening speech delivered by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The Danish parliament convenes in a chamber at Christiansborg, and for the event, the building was adorned with the country’s flag. Queen Mary opted for a deep red skirt suit, accessorized with a vintage Dior brooch featuring turquoises, which she first wore in Paris.

The Danish parliament is traditionally opened on the first Tuesday of October each year.
