The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially announced the theme for the 2026 Met Gala, and the fashion world is already in a creative frenzy. This year's Costume Institute exhibition — and the accompanying first Monday in May dress code — will be "Threads of Rebellion: Fashion and Social Movements," exploring how clothing has been used as a tool of protest, identity, and revolution throughout history.
Anna Wintour, who continues to chair the event at 76, described the theme as "the most relevant and urgent we've ever chosen" during a press conference at the museum on Monday. The exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton, will feature over 150 garments spanning from 18th-century revolutionary France to contemporary streetwear and protest fashion, including pieces worn during the civil rights movement, punk era, and modern-day activist movements.
The announcement has already sparked intense speculation about what the A-list guest list will wear on May 4. Fashion insiders predict bold political statements on the carpet, with designers reportedly racing to create pieces that honor the theme's spirit of dissent. "This is a theme that rewards creativity and conviction, not just beauty," said Vogue fashion director Virginia Smith. "The most memorable looks will be the ones that actually say something."
Co-chairs for the 2026 gala have been confirmed as Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Pharrell Williams, and Amanda Gorman — a lineup that Wintour said "represents the intersection of fashion, music, literature, and cultural change." Ticket prices remain at $75,000 per seat, with tables starting at $350,000. The event is expected to raise over $25 million for the Costume Institute, continuing the gala's status as the fashion industry's most important and lucrative annual fundraiser.
