Former NBA star Derek Fisher and his wife, Gloria Govan, have separated after five years of marriage, though a complete split is not yet in the cards. The couple's spokesperson confirmed on Friday, July 24, that Fisher, 51, and the 41-year-old reality television personality, have been living apart. The pair reportedly remains in constant communication and is actively working on their relationship issues, with no current plans for divorce.
Fisher and Govan first began dating in 2015, following their respective separations from previous spouses. Govan was previously in a long-term relationship with basketball player Matt Barnes, who was a teammate of Fisher's on the Los Angeles Lakers. Govan and Barnes married in 2012, split in 2014, and finalized their divorce two years later. They share 17-year-old twin sons, Carter Kelly and Isaiah Michaell.
Fisher, for his part, married his first wife, Candace Fisher, in 2005. They welcomed twins Tatum and Drew in June 2006. Fisher is also a father to daughter Chloe from a prior relationship, and Candace was also a mother to son Marshall from a previous relationship. Derek and Candace separated in 2015 after a decade of marriage, with their divorce finalized the following year. When Derek and Govan first started dating, Fisher was involved in an altercation with Barnes in October. No charges were filed against either basketball player, but Barnes received a two-game suspension.
Govan and Fisher became engaged in 2018 after three years of dating, and they tied the knot three years later at Cielo Farms in Malibu. In a July 2021 interview with People, Govan spoke about their nuptials, stating, "For Derek and me, our wedding has been about unity and a blending of families. After the pandemic, we realized how important family really is. We could have easily eloped or filled out the paperwork and gotten it over with. But sharing this moment and event with those closest to us took priority over taking the easy route. We kept our guest list limited to those closest to us." Govan further explained that as both had been married before, they were applying lessons learned from past relationships to strengthen their current one. "For both of us, this is our second marriage. The most exciting part about this time around is all the growth we bring to the relationship," she recalled. "The trials and tribulations we’ve experienced have played a huge part in who we are in our relationship today. From the start, we’ve been very honest about our expectations from our friendship to marriage."
