Cher has launched a scathing attack on her daughter-in-law, Marieangela King-Allman, in a new court filing, seeking to prevent the 39-year-old from gaining guardianship of her son, Elijah Blue Allman. Elijah, Cher's youngest son with ex-husband Gregg Allman, born in 1976, has reportedly been struggling with his mental health and is currently residing in a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital. Cher and Elijah are said to be estranged.
On August 28, Cher and her legal team filed a response opposing Marieangela’s bid to oversee Elijah's conservatorship. This filing came just days before Elijah was scheduled to appear in court. The statement asserted, "The New Hampshire State Hospital and the rest of the family remain adamantly opposed to Mrs King-Allman serving given her estrangement from Elijah." It further cited "the previously pending divorce, her refusal and failure to assist Elijah and [family friend] Kayti Pease while he was struggling before he was arrested in New Hampshire, and/or because the family believes that she is inserting herself back into the picture on a quest for money and/or a bit of fame."
The filing continued, highlighting Marieangela's alleged indifference to Elijah's struggles: "Mr Allman's condition was not unknown to her, as Kayti Pease had repeatedly and often requested that Mrs King-Allman assist her in providing care for Mr Allman. Mrs King-Allman never lifted a finger to help, despite the fact that Mr Allman was supposedly her spouse. Now that a conservatorship is pending, Mrs King-Allman clearly sees a financial opportunity to control his income, and she has attempted to seize the opportunity created by his incarceration to try to reinsert herself back into his life."
Concluding the statement, Cher's team argued, "Whether Mr Allman ultimately chooses to be in a relationship with Mrs King-Allman is a choice he will hopefully be able to make independently, but given her behavior and indifference to his health and living situation over the prior year, she, in no way, should ever be considered as a viable candidate to serve as a court-appointed fiduciary."
Cher had previously sought to appoint her son with Gregg, Devon Allman, as Elijah's guardian. Elijah was slated to appear in court on September 1 for a determination on Marieangela's suitability as his guardian, but he failed to appear, leading to a postponement until December 1.
Marieangela and Elijah have experienced an on-again, off-again marriage since 2013. She initially filed for divorce in 2021, a petition that was dismissed in February 2024. She filed again in April 2025, only for it to be dismissed once more in June 2026. Marieangela has claimed that Cher is estranged from Elijah and does not have his best interests at heart. "As Elijah's wife of 13 years, I love him and want what is best for him, which is a robust and long-term treatment plan," she stated.
Marieangela further alleged, "My husband and his mother have been estranged for many years, and she has repeatedly blocked my efforts to get him help. If she is in control of who becomes conservator, I believe it would jeopardize his chances of a hopeful recovery." Elijah, 50, has a long history of addiction. Cher first filed for conservatorship over him in 2023, but the court denied her request. He was arrested in February 2026, and again just two days later for burglary and breach of bail.
