Angelina Jolie Says She Hasn't Dated Since Her Divorce and Is Ready to "Live Again"

Angelina Jolie is on a journey of self-rediscovery, aiming to reclaim parts of herself she feels have been lost amidst personal challenges, motherhood, and life's transformations. "Life has broken me a little," the Oscar winner confessed in an interview with Vanity Fair Italia. "I have to live again. Be free again." This introspective period coincides with the release of her new film, Couture, directed by Alice Winocour. In the movie, Jolie portrays Maxine Walker, an American filmmaker diagnosed with breast cancer while on a business trip in Paris, forcing her to confront her illness, life choices, and identity.

At 51, Jolie credits her daughters, Shiloh, Zahara, and Vivienne, for helping her rediscover herself. "They speak to me as young women, and I see what I want for them," she explained. "I see what I don’t want them to lose and what I want them to hold on to. And in a way, this is reminding me of what I might have lost myself." Along with her daughters, Jolie is also a mother to sons Maddox, Pax, and Knox. She specifically highlights her daughters as providing a fresh perspective on her own identity. "I think, in some way, they’re bringing me back to my old self. I think they kind of want me now to not just be ‘Mom.’ There’s a different room for me to be that woman again, that’s not just a mom."

This personal connection is deeply rooted in her own medical history. In 2013, Angelina Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy after discovering she carried the BRCA1 genetic mutation. This decision was influenced by her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away in 2007 from breast and ovarian cancer. While working on Couture, Jolie was particularly struck by the protagonist's relationship with love and her femininity. She observed that stories about women's cancer often focus solely on the disease, neglecting other aspects of the individual. "So often we see, when there’s a project that’s dealing with a woman’s cancer, it’s not often where her sexuality post-diagnosis is celebrated," she told Yahoo Entertainment. For Jolie, the crucial message is to continue living life fully, preventing the disease from defining one's entire existence. "This was a part of continuing to live all aspects, to live to your last breath, right? And not to start living only as a patient."

This introspection has also led the actress to reflect on her romantic life. Jolie revealed that she has not been in a relationship since her marriage to Brad Pitt ended. "To be candid, I haven’t dated since I divorced a decade ago," she stated. "So I kind of get in my head that that aspect of me is not centered in my life if I’m focusing on my children, my family." However, playing Maxine in Couture reminded her that these two aspects of life can coexist. "It doesn’t feel like I’m 51 and starting to think of being older. I’m thinking I have to live again. Be free again."
